Richard Sayers – Team Murka’s Farrier
Richard Sayers is responsible for all of Team Murka’s horses. He visits both stables in the UK and Russia every 5 weeks to trim and balance the equine hooves as well as fit any shoes.
Sayers must also ensure that he and all staff treat the horses humanly, with respect, and welfare as the primary consideration. He makes proper arrangements for the provision of relief and emergency cover in the case of a horse falling ill under his supervision. Lastly he inspects the horses environment to encourage proper standards of care are taken when looking after horses.
Sayers whole family has a history of riding and working with horses. However before starting his own farriery business, he had to complete a thorough 5 year exhaustive apprenticeship. Now in the business for over 17 years, Sayers recommends the profession to anyone who loves being outside and spending time with animals.
Naturally one would assume that Sayers is an avid horseman himself. Not true! He prefers shooting and golfing in his spare time.
Since May 2007, Sayers flies to Moscow with all of his equipment to look after Team Murka’s horses which are kept at the State Riding School in the centre of the capital city. Along with a colleague, Sayers tends to the entire fleet of horses there in just 2 days.
An average work day is twelve hours long starting at 6:30am and finishing about 6:30pm. So one wonders when Richard has time to play golf.
