Dragon Class

The Dragon’s long keel and elegant metre-boat lines remain unchanged, but today Dragons are constructed using the latest technology to make the boat durable and easy to maintain.

Both new and old wooden boats regularly win major competitions while looking as beautiful as any craft afloat.

Designed in 1929 with a length measuring 8.9 meters, the key to the Dragon’s enduring appeal lies in the careful development of its rig. Its well balanced sail plan makes boat handling easy for lightweights, while a controlled process of development has produced one of the most flexible and controllable rigs of any racing boat.

All of Murka’s Dragons share the legendary and championship winning heritage of the Petticrows name. Petticrows built its first Dragon in 1988. Ian Howlett, the famous 12M, 8M and 6M Designer optimised the hull shape.

Tank tests were carried out and a lot of time and money was spent on R&D on all aspects of the construction. The developmental process continues even today at Petticrows in consultation with American boat designer Brendan Dobroth.
