Tom Peel – 49er Crew

At only 6 years old, Tom Peel hopped aboard his first Topper at a lake near Banbury, Oxfordshire. Peel did not have an immediate love affair with sailing until he took part in a couple of regattas.

It was the racing not plain sailing that which attracted Peel. Peel’s father bought him a Hoby 405, which was his first boat with a trapeze. Peel partnered with Ed Chapman in the Hoby 405 and won everything they entered. Competition and the ability to finely tune endless possibilities to achieve a performance advantage captured Peel’s imagination and sailing took over Peel’s life.

Like Mason, the Royal Yachting Association and Team GBR recognized and rewarded Peel’s discipline and efforts to race all over the country, Europe and the world. As a member of both the Junior and Youth squads, Peel raced all sorts of different machines after the Hoby 405, Peel competed in the 29er with Ed Chapman and won both the Youth Nationals and the European championships in Denmark together.

Peel also enjoyed much success racing with Hugh Styles in the F18. They won Nationals and finished 4th overall in the World championships in Australia.

In early 2007, Peel still possessed a great determination to continue competitive sailing but had noticed several of his teammates had changed their priorities. It was then when Peel teamed up with Richard Mason in the Team Murka 49er.
